Butterflies in Wanchai Gap
Hong Kong can be surprisingly green, just 15 minutes from your apartment. I walked around Wanchai Gap, and saw so many butterflies and birds. Just take a taxi to where Middle Gap Raod crosses Stubbs Road, and start walking... happy path.

Wonderful European Bee-eaters
I mean, seriously? Maybe my previous post of elephant infants lying in that manner is not so far-fetched.

Sámi people and the reindeers
Don't get me wrong, I'm not obsessed with deers and cows... it's just that the last posts have happened to be so. I was reading the National Geographic in my hotel room in Jakarta, and was struck by how beautiful and other worldly everything and everyone looked. They are the Sámi people who follow the reindeers to live, mostly in northern Sweden.

Amazingly, they have most likely settled in 10,000 BC, and are apparently the only official indigenous people in the nordic countries.

Beautiful white lions
Can you tell what's striking in the photo? The lion is white, which some biologists call it an accidental breed.
White lions have difficulty surviving with no camoflage pigment in the savanna. Easily spotted thus mostly unable to hunt for themselves, there are only 500 in the world, and 7 in true wilderness (many are in a zoo).
The first white lion was discovered in 1975 and until now only seen wild in the Timbavati region of Africa. Since then, conservatists have tried to reintroduce them to wild harems by bringing them up in semi-wilderness and trying to push them back into complete wilderness.
In a way some say, this is an act of reintroducing a gene that was not supposed to survive. However, others think that there must be a reason that nature made the white lion gene survive thus far, perhaps surviving through the ice age.
In anycase, they are extremely beautiful and look so sacred. But is that the wrong reason to work towards conserving? But maybe it's ok according to mother nature (for the beautiful and weak to survive as well) as we may enter another ice age and the weak may flip?

Deep sea water fish
Have you seen these deep sea (defined to be living 200m deep or more) water fish? They look like crazy jewelery on a high fashion lady.

Due to the absolute darkness, many can emit light themself. Some just don't have eyes and others just show its entire brain because there's no worries of being seen.
There is also a fish that once the male and female meet, they somehow get sucked onto each other, because it is so damn hard to meet one another in complete darkness.
I also saw a video of a flat fish that does not get cooked while it's emersing itself in 200 degrees of volcanic eruption in the water. How are we supposed to cook it and eat it if we ever have to?
As crazy as they sound, most of them really do look the part and not at all a lady's brooch...

Chinese Bird Garden
I went to the bird garden in Kowloon this weekend. I got off one station too early and had to walk through this market (market from hell!) which was utter chaos. But once there, it was very peaceful. Many bird lovers were bringing their pet birds to show off.
It was nice to just sit there and hear them chirp.
It's shocking but very HK that there are vendors who sell quail eggs right next to the bird garden.
